A short history of telephone Although it may seem like telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell first, it is said that its invention can be credited to many others. There are many claims where the credit should be given but nobody knows exactly who invented the first telephone. The first phone call was made on April 27th, 1875, in Boston Massachusetts. This calls lasted only for 32 seconds. It is said that there was a second call made 2 hours later, but it is even less clear who was the inventor of this phone. How people discovered the idea of making calls through telephone? Many people throughout history have tried to communicate by sending sound over distance through several methods. This includes smoke signals, drums, semaphore telegraphs and finally string telephone which was used during American Civil War. With the help of string telephone soldiers could talk with each other over short distances using long wires stretched along the trenches. String telephones were quite ineffective because it required direct line-of-sight between two points and two operators to work them at same time. It was inefficient and it could only be used for limited distances. However string telephones were still ideal for sending simple messages between people. This is where the first telephone was used. Telephone Company, The first phone company in 1876 was Bell System and it began operating on July 1 of that year. The company name was "The American Speaking Telephone Company". At the time there were about 21,000 telephone lines in use throughout the United States with bare wires all over town. That same year many more phone companies opened in the US and Canada to provide service to their own area so it will be difficult to trace who did what even if we know that Alexander Graham Bell did all of this stuff. The first telephone exchange was opened by Bell System on July 1, 1876. This is called "The American Speaking Telephone Company" which was the predecessor of Western Union. The set up included 56 switches, 56 wires and 56 instruments made by Western Electric. It became the first phone company in the world. Its brand name was "Municipal Telephone Company." The company's purpose was to provide telephone service to its members that includes public service to the community and private service for merchants and others that wanted it. At that time there were about 21,000 phone lines in use throughout the United States only with bare wires all over town. That same year many more phone companies opened in the US and Canada to provide service to its own area so it will be difficult to trace who did what even if we know that Alexander Graham Bell did all of this stuff. Bell System , "American Telephone and Telegraph Company" known as AT&T, came out on top with the merger of American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1899. It was regarded as the world's largest company at that time, which served customers in 60 countries. AT&T was broken up by an act of Congress in 1982; however AT&T itself was reorganized into several companies, the largest of which is called "AT&T Corp. eccc085e13
